The government has moved to introduce Sri Lanka Standards for imported passenger car and three-wheeler tyres, in a move aimed at protecting consumers and ensuring fair competition for local manufacturers.
The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to submit the Import and Export (Control) Regulations No. 08 of 2026 to parliament for approval.
The regulations were introduced through Extraordinary Gazette Notification No. 2508/27 dated October 1, 2026, amending the existing import and export control regulations.
Under the new regulations, Sri Lanka Standard 1212 will apply to imported passenger car tyres classified under HS Code 4011.10.90, while Sri Lanka Standard 1347 will apply to pneumatic tyres for three-wheeled vehicles under HS Code 4011.90.10.
The Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development recommended introducing the standards, including testing requirements for imported tyres, to ensure consumer safety and establish a fair competitive environment for domestic manufacturers.
The Cabinet approved the resolution submitted by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development to present the regulations to parliament for approval.
