Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General as Strategic Partner for ‘Scale Up 2.0’ highlights risk protection as cornerstone for SME growth

Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Ltd. (SLICGL), the nation’s trusted insurer, was the Strategic Partner for ‘Scale Up 2.0 – National SME Forum 2026, a national-level platform organised by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, held on 11 August 2026 at the Grand Marquee, Taj Samudra Hotel.

The Forum was held under the theme ‘Connected. Competitive. Ready to Grow’ with the participation of Sri Lanka’s SME community including industry stakeholders, business leaders, decision-makers, investors and potential partners. It aimed to support the growth and development of SMEs, offering opportunities to gain insights, connect with decision-makers, explore new markets and identify business partners.

As Sri Lanka’s SMEs continue to scale up, safeguarding their operations is equally critical as driving growth. Proactive risk management and comprehensive insurance protection can serve as a foundation for sustainable business success.

SLICGL’s participation at Scale Up 2.0 provided a direct channel for entrepreneurs and business leaders, offering insights into their evolving needs and building awareness of general insurance solutions tailored to SMEs, in line with a broader commitment to supporting the development of Sri Lanka’s SME sector. The company’s approach at the forum was intentionally advisory, helping SME owners understand their risk exposure and evaluate options.

For most SMEs, growth is measured in new markets, new partnerships, and new opportunities. What often receives less attention is the protection of what has already been built including the premises, machinery, vehicles, and people, especially when unforeseen challenges arise.

Moreover, as SMEs scale, they encounter a wider spectrum of risks including property damage, fire, natural disasters, accidents, vehiclerelated incidents, liability exposures, business interruptions, and other unexpected events. Comprehensive insurance protection enables businesses to absorb the financial impact of such disruptions and continue operating with confidence, rather than allowing a single incident to derail longterm progress.

SMEs typically invest heavily in premises, machinery, equipment, stock, and vehicles. Insurance provides financial security against losses and damage to these assets, ensuring continuity. Every enterprise carries inherent risk regardless of size or sector and identifying those risks in advance, rather than reacting after the fact, enables SMEs to prepare effectively. When incidents do occur, appropriate cover helps manage financial pressures and sustain operations.

Growth also expands responsibility. As SMEs employ more staff, serve larger customer bases, and engage with wider networks of partners, their liability and accidentrelated exposures increase. Insurance plays a direct role in managing these responsibilities. Similarly, as businesses enter new markets, acquire assets, expand their workforce, or scale operations, their risk profile evolves, requiring protection which adapts in tandem.

A competitive SME sector depends on businesses that thrive in good years but also on those resilient enough to withstand difficult ones. Risk management and insurance protection are essential components of resilience.

As Sri Lanka’s SMEs continue to scale, protecting the business is as vital as growing it. SMEs at Scale Up 2.0 explored new markets, partnerships, technology, and investment. SLICGL emphasized each opportunity brings new risks and responsibilities. Its presence at the forum underscored an ongoing commitment to helping SME owners view proactive risk management not as a competing priority, but as a strategic enabler of sustainable grow
