Sri Lanka Football: A historic rise

Sri Lanka football has achieved a tremendous rise in the FIFA Men’s international rankings over the past three years-a remarkable transformation that deserves recognition not only in Sri Lanka, but across international football as well, the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) stated in a media release.

It said for a small footballing nation in the South Asian region, climbing so significantly in such a short span of time is a historic and a landmark achievement.

Very few nations globally could point to such a phenomenal and exceptional turnaround within a similar timeframe, the FFSL noted.

According to the FFSL, what is inherently and increasingly clear is that football in this country knows where it is heading.

The game’s local governing body pointed out that at the heart of this transformation is its head Jaswar Umar, whose vision, strategic direction and determined execution have provided a clear pathway for the development of the game.

Working alongside Umar, head coach and Kuwaiti national Abdullah Almutairi has translated that vision of the FFSL President onto the pitch-building a side with greater confidence, fighting spirit, admirable discipline and unyielding belief.

Together, the President and the coach have created something even more important: a renewed link between the national team and the football-loving people of Sri Lanka.

Fans are once again excited. Stadiums are gaining energy. Sri Lankans are following the fortunes of the national team with growing pride and expectation.

The FFSL has reiterated the fact that this is no longer simply about rankings. It is about building belief. It is about changing the football culture and its landscape.

It's about creating a new identity for Sri Lankan football. The journey that has just been kick started is far from being over.

There is still much to be achieved, and the path ahead will demand even greater commitment, dedication, discipline and unity.

But today, Sri Lanka football can look forward with hope, confidence and optimism. The journey continues, the vision continues and Sri Lanka football is rising.
