Five sports administrators have submitted their nominations to vie for the right to replace outgoing the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL) President Suresh Subramaniam, at its election of office bearers to be held at the Olympic House premises on next Saturday (25).
Among the five officials who have come forward to grab the coveted seat are two who have also served in the outgoing Executive Committee of the NOCSL namely Deva Henry and Shirantha Peries.
They are joined by Asanga Seneviratne, Jaswar Umar and incumbent treasurer Pritiviraj Perera respectively, as the contest for the top post of the NOCSL for the 2026-30 four-year term heats up.
Seneviratne has submitted his nomination from the Sri Lanka Amateur Baseball Softball Association being its president, while Henry has submitted his nomination from the Ski and Snowball Association being its head.
Peries has done likewise from the National Shooting Sport Federation of Sri Lanka as its vice president.
Umar has signed his nomination papers from the Football Federation of Sri Lanka as a common candidate, while Perera has done similarly on behalf of the National Association for Canoeing and Kayaking in Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, incumbent Secretary General Rifdy Fahmy from the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union is set to face a stiff fight to retain his post from Nishantha Piyasena of the Modern Pentathlon Federation of Sri Lanka during next week’s election.
In the meantime, 10 officials have handed over their nominations to vie for four posts of vice presidents at the Olympic House.
However, a key feature of the contest for the vice president is two of the candidates who are set to battle it out for the NOCSL presidency namely Seneviratne and Pritiviraj Perera, having also submitted their nominations for the vice president post as well.
Another notable aspect in this particular category is incumbent vice president Niloo Jayatilake contesting the same post alongside the newly-elected head of Sri Lanka Athletics Bimal Wijayasinghe.
Any objections for the nominations which closed on 11 April are set to be entertained from today (17) till Sunday (19), with the election to be overseen by a three-member committee helmed by retired Supreme Court Justice K. T. Chithrasiri.
