Newcomers SSC impress – run up highest total 328/3

Major Club Women’s Limited-Over tournament

SSC who are new to women’s cricket barely two years into the game, ran up the highest total of the ongoing Major Club Women’s Limited-Over tournament when they hit up an imposing 328-3 to beat CCC by 181 runs at the CCC grounds yesterday.

It was the highest total of the tournament beating the 302-4 scored by Navy SC against Badureliya CC. 

National cricketer Lihini Apsara stole the limelight with a superb knock of 127* off 142 balls (16 fours) and her two partnerships of 97 for the first wicket with Iresha Shyamali (35) and an unbroken stand of 139 off 93 balls with other national player Ama Kanchana (74* off 48 balls, 6 fours, 3 sixes). It was the second century scored in the tournament after Harshitha Samarawickrama’s 140 for Navy SC against Badureliya CC. CCC were dismissed for 147 by left-arm seamer Iresha Shyamali (4/25) and the right-arm leg-spin of Chamari Lakshani (3/21). Vishmi Soysa top scored with 51 for CCC.

Front runners Navy SC, Air Force SC and Chilaw Marians CC stretched their unbeaten record to four wins out of four with facile wins.

Navy SC routed Army SC by 5 wickets at Welisara bowling out the soldiers for 59 off 22.4 overs and knocking the runs off in 19.5 overs. National players Udeshika Prabodhani (4/20), Inoka Ranaweera (2/8) and Sathya Sandeepani (3/5) were the destroyers of the Army SC batting.

Air Force SC also dealt a similar blow to Badureliya CC dismissing them for 59 off 34.1 overs defending a low total of 104 to win by 45 runs at Maggona. The highest individual score was 21* by Air Force SC’s Ayesha Keerthiratna and the bowling honours shared by Badureliya CC seamers Umayangana Peiris and Sewmini Sasikala with three wickets apiece. 

Sri Lanka women’s captain Chamari Athapaththu starred in Chilaw Marians CC’s 10-wicket win against Colts at Colts grounds. Athapaththu took 4/16 to spin out Colts for 126 and then followed it up with an unbeaten 65 off 67 balls (9 fours, 1 six) in an unbroken opening stand of 127 off 24.1 overs with Sanjana Kavindi (53* of 78 balls, 7 fours).

Panadura SC scored their third win to keep pace with the three leaders beating Ace Capital CC by 3 wickets at Salawa Army ground, Kosgama. Pramudi Methsara (seam) and Rishmi Sanjana (off-spin) took three wickets each to dismiss Ace Capital CC for 97 in 35.5 overs. Skipper Piumi Wathsala played a fighting knock of 33 off 40 balls to see Panadura SC home in the 25th over after they were 58-5 at one stage. Off-spinner Janadi Anali had figures of 3/33. – [ST]
