Lankan Under-19 take on Nepal today in Asia Cup

“We have a well-balanced under-19 team to compete in the Asia Cup, and they are ready to take on challenges,” said Sri Lankan under-19 coach Dilruwan Perera before the team’s departure from SLC headquarters.

The Sri Lankan team will play their first game against Nepal today at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Coach Dilruwan Perera, who is also a member of the national selection committee, further stated that this is his first under-19 tournament in his new role as coach, and he has good confidence in this team, which comprises both experienced and new players. “We have a good chance to pose a challenge against the opposing teams, and our aim is to take it match by match,” said former national off-spinner Dilruwan Perera.

The Sri Lankan team, led by Vihas Thewmika, also commented on their preparations for this Asia Cup. “We have good team commitment, and all players are very keen to give their fullest effort to the team,” added Thewmika, the all-rounder from Thurstan College.

“We never underestimate any opponent, and the first hurdle is to enter the final. The Sri Lankan team has entered the final five times in Asia Cup history but has yet to win the title, settling for runners-up on all five occasions.” Shane Fernando, a member of the junior selection committee, has also joined the team as the manager of the tour, while former national player Saman Jayantha is the assistant coach.

Eight teams divided into two groups will battle in the Under-19 Asia Cup. Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal are in Group ‘B,’ while India, Pakistan, Japan, and the UAE are in Group ‘A.’
