JXG (Janashakthi Group) has partnered with the Mercantile Hockey Association as the Title Sponsor of the 9-A-Side and 7-A-Side Hockey Tournaments for a three-year period from 2026 to 2028, continuing a longstanding connection to the sport that first began with the Group’s Founder and Chairman Emeritus, C.T.A. Schaffter.
C.T.A. Schaffter’s association with hockey spans over 25 years, beginning during his school days and extending to the national level. He represented the Mercantile Hockey Association at the National Championships for several years and was part of the Mercantile side that secured the Senior National Hockey Championships of Ceylon on seven occasions, in 1956, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962 and 1963. In 1957, he captained the Colombo Hockey Association to victory at the Senior National Hockey Championships of Ceylon.
His contributions to the sport extend well beyond his playing career. C.T.A. Schaffter served as a National Selector in Hockey from 1960 to 1962 and again in 1966, when he was appointed Chairman of Selectors. He returned to the National Selection Committee from 1972 to 1973 and continued until his resignation in 1974. He also served as Vice President of the Mercantile Hockey Association from 1968 to 1971 and as Vice Patron from 1972 to 1976. His leadership in the sport further expanded to the Ceylon/Sri Lanka Hockey Federation, where he served in multiple senior capacities including Vice Patron, Vice President, and Secretary, in addition to serving as Manager of the Sri Lanka National Hockey Team.
The sponsorship cheque was officially handed over in the presence of C.T.A. Schaffter, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of JXG, together with officials of JXG and the Mercantile Hockey Association.
The partnership carries forward a relationship with hockey that has been closely associated with C.T.A. Schaffter for decades, while providing a platform for JXG to support the continued development of corporate hockey in Sri Lanka. Through the 9-A-Side and 7-A-Side tournaments, the sponsorship will contribute towards creating greater opportunities for corporate players, recognising sporting talent, and strengthening the role of hockey within Sri Lanka’s business community.
The partnership also reflects JXG’s commitment to carrying forward the sporting values and legacy that have been part of its history, while supporting initiatives that unite talent, competition, and camaraderie across the corporate sector.
