Hutch Launches e-Waste Collection Stations at Brand Shops to Support Sustainability Initiatives.

In a significant step towards promoting sustainability, Hutch, one of Sri Lanka’s leading telecommunications providers, has partnered with Ceylon Waste Management Ltd to launch a new project focused on installing e-waste collection stations at its flagship store and brand shops.

This groundbreaking project aims to promote the responsible disposal and recycling of electronic waste, starting with mobile phones and batteries. Customers are encouraged to use this facility to recycle outdated or discarded devices, reducing environmental impact and supporting the circular economy.

To encourage engagement, Hutch offers exclusive rewards. Customers recycling smartphones will receive 50GB of data valid for one year, while those disposing of 2G phones will earn 500 minutes of talk time, also valid for one year.

Ceylon Waste Management Ltd, a specialist in e-waste recycling, will oversee the collection and ensure environmentally safe processing.

Saumitra Gupta, CEO of Hutch stated, "With the rapid pace of technological advancement, electronic waste has become a pressing environmental issue. Through this initiative, Hutch is taking a proactive step to address the challenge. We’re not only encouraging responsible disposal but also creating a direct connection between sustainability and our services."

Sudesh Nandasiri, Managing Director of Ceylon Waste Management Ltd, also shared his thoughts, "The collaboration with Hutch marks a milestone in addressing e-waste in Sri Lanka. Every mobile phone discarded in our bins represents one less device polluting our environment and we ensure all the data of discarded items will be protected as per the data protection act in Sri Lanka. Together with Hutch, we’re laying the groundwork for a more sustainable future where corporations and individuals share responsibility for protecting the planet."

With plans to expand the initiative to include other electronic devices in the future, Hutch continues to demonstrate its dedication to environmental sustainability and responsible corporate practices.
