Hemas Hospital Wattala Raises the Benchmark for Breast Care in Sri Lanka at Landmark Clinical Symposium

Hemas Hospital Wattala reinforced its position as a leading destination for breast health in Sri Lanka through its Clinical Symposium on Breast Health & Cancer Care, held under the theme ‘Empowering Care, Awareness & Hope’.

Conceptualised and led by Dr. Nissanka Jayawardhana, the symposium brought together leading medical specialists, patients, survivors, media and healthcare stakeholders to discuss early detection, breast cancer treatment, recovery and the importance of taking timely action.

Held as part of Hemas Hospital Wattala’s annual Breastober movement, the event also highlighted the hospital’s comprehensive breast-care ecosystem, combining advanced screening, specialist expertise, treatment pathways and patient support.

Moving breast health from awareness to action

Leading consultants including Dr. Kanchana Wijjesinghe, Dr. Kalum Panditharathne, Dr. Nissanka Jayawardhana, Dr. Ajith De Silva and Dr. Lanka Dissanayake shared perspectives on screening, treatment and community support.

A dedicated patient and survivor session added an important human dimension, allowing real experiences of diagnosis, treatment and recovery to be shared and reinforcing the message that early action and appropriate care can bring hope.

The symposium sought to make breast health a more open and informed conversation, encouraging women to move beyond fear and take a more proactive approach to screening.

Making mammography a more reassuring experience

For many women, concerns around mammography extend beyond the result to the examination itself, which can feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable.

Hemas Hospital Wattala offers advanced 2D Digital Mammography and 3D Digital Breast Tomosynthesis through Hologic Selenia Dimensions and Hologic 3Dimensions systems, providing some of the country’s most advanced breast imaging capability.

The systems combine detailed imaging with a more patient-focused experience. Their patient-focused compression is designed with comfort in mind, while dose-efficient imaging supports patient safety.

Advanced 3D imaging also allows clinicians to examine breast tissue in greater detail and identify subtle abnormalities that may be more difficult to detect through conventional imaging.

For women undergoing screening, this translates into a simpler benefit: a mammogram designed to be more comfortable, backed by advanced imaging and greater confidence in the quality of the examination.

The technology is supported by a wider clinical ecosystem connecting screening and diagnosis with specialist consultation, surgical oncology and recovery support.

Breastober: turning awareness into action

As part of the 28 October programme, members of the public were also offered free physical breast examinations at Hemas Hospital Wattala, turning awareness into an immediate opportunity for preventive action.

Through Breastober, Hemas Hospital Wattala continues to encourage women to understand their breast health, seek appropriate screening and access medical advice earlier.

Chinthaka Dissanayake, General Manager – Marketing, Hemas Hospitals & Laboratories Group, said:

“Breastober has always been about taking breast cancer awareness beyond a message or a campaign. Awareness becomes meaningful when it gives someone the confidence to take the next step — to speak about breast health, seek advice or undergo screening.

“With this symposium, we wanted to bring together medical expertise and real patient experiences to make that conversation more open, relatable and hopeful. Our role as a healthcare brand is not only to be there when someone becomes a patient, but also to help people make better-informed decisions about their health before they reach that point.”

Prabhan Gunawardena, Director General Manager – Hemas Hospital Wattala, said:

“At Hemas Hospital Wattala, we have developed a comprehensive breast-care ecosystem that brings together advanced screening technology, experienced specialists and a coordinated pathway of care under one roof.

“We also understand that mammography can be a source of anxiety for some women. Our investment in advanced 3D mammography is therefore not only about high-quality imaging, but also about creating a more reassuring and comfortable experience for the patient.

“When advanced technology is combined with specialist expertise and continuity of care, we can give women greater confidence at every stage — from screening and diagnosis through treatment and recovery.”

Through Breastober, advanced mammography, specialist expertise and comprehensive care pathways, Hemas Hospital Wattala continues to strengthen its position as a leading centre for breast health and cancer care in Sri Lanka.
