Govt. targets lower road deaths by 2029 – Minister of Transport

Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake stated that over 2,700 people die annually in road accidents in Sri Lanka.

He made the remarks at a workshop organised by the National Transport Medical Institute.

The Minister stated that the government aims to significantly reduce road accident deaths by 2029 through a national transport safety plan.

He noted that driver behaviour contributes to around 53% of accidents, while 15–18% of drivers are reportedly linked to drug use.

He added that reforms include improved training, standardised bus services, and regulated vehicle imports to enhance road safety.
