Dr. Hayeshika Fernando named Most Outstanding Female Educator at Calin Popular Awards 2026

Dr. Hayeshika Fernando has been recognised as the Most Outstanding Female Educator of the Year 2026 at the Calin Popular Awards, marking a significant milestone in her two decades of dedication to primary education and Grade Five Scholarship examination preparation in Sri Lanka. With 20 years of teaching experience, Dr. Fernando has guided numerous young learners in preparing for the Scholarship examination. She currently conducts educational programmes through Queen’s Education Institute, with locations in Colombo 03, Negombo and Katana. She is widely known for her signature educational programme, “Shishyathwayata Mama Sudanam” (I am Ready for the Scholarship), which focuses on developing students’ subject knowledge, examination skills and confidence through a structured learning approach.

Designed for students from Grades Two to Five, the programme combines theoretical lessons, subject-based exercises, model examination papers and comprehensive discussions. Special attention is given to Papers I and II of the Scholarship examination, with detailed explanations and targeted practice sessions aimed at strengthening students’ understanding and performance. A key component of her teaching methodology is Sinhala language development. A comprehensive 10-month grammar programme covers essential areas including vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms, idioms, proverbs and essay writing, incorporating language concepts taught from Grades Three to Five. Environmental Studies is another major focus, with lessons covering 16 topics from the primary school curriculum. Educational videos, practical explanations, student note-writing activities and exercises based on past examination questions are incorporated to make learning more effective and engaging.

Recognising the importance of accessible education, Dr. Fernando has also integrated digital learning into her teaching approach. Students can participate in live classes and access recorded lessons, enabling them to revisit important topics and strengthen their understanding at their own pace. Her educational approach extends beyond examination preparation, emphasising strong foundational knowledge, independent learning and student confidence. Through systematic teaching methods and continuous assessment, she aims to help children overcome learning difficulties while preparing them for academic success. The recognition at the Calin Popular Awards 2026 reflects Dr. Fernando’s longstanding contribution to primary education and her commitment to empowering young learners. With two decades of experience, she continues to support students in developing the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary for their educational journey.
