Amid predicted water cuts, medical experts have urged parents to ensure their children bathe at least twice a day to prevent dehydration and heat-related illnesses due to rising temperatures across the country.
Addressing the media, paediatric specialist Dr. Deepal Perera said there has been a noticeable increase in skin ailments among children, largely due to the prevailing hot weather conditions.
Dr. Perera stressed that parents must remain vigilant and take simple but effective steps to protect their children’s health during the heat.
He advised parents to encourage children to bathe twice daily, stay well-hydrated, wear light clothing and consume natural drinks to minimize the impact of extreme heat.
Meanwhile, Dr. Perera also requested them to provide more water for their children. Excessive perspiration occurs when people are engaged in paddy cultivation, road construction, schoolchildren playing in playgrounds, or training sessions.
"Failure to take sufficient fluids and minerals could lead to critical health complications such as fatigue, headache, drowsiness, vomiting, body pain, insomnia, increased sleepiness, and loss of appetite," he said.
"If children play on the road without drinking water, they could suffer from dehydration and heat shock conditions," he stated.
As such, Dr. Perera requested that parents give their children two bottles of water when going to school.
