Devindya Oshini becomes first Sri Lankan to reach No.1 in global chess rankings

Sri Lanka’s rising chess star, Woman International Master Devindya Oshini Gunawardhana, has become the first Sri Lankan to achieve a World No. 1 ranking, topping the Under-13 Girls’ category. 

Oshini also entered the global top 50 in the World Junior Girls’ Rankings, reaching 42nd place, and holds a peak FIDE rating of 2,272, making her the highest-rated junior female player worldwide.

Her achievements include winning the Girls’ Under-10 title at the 2021 FIDE Youth Chess World Cup, the 2022 Asian Youth Championship, the 2023 FIDE World Cadets Under-12 title, and becoming the youngest National Women’s Champion in 2024. 

She recently won bronze at the 2025 FIDE Under-12 World Cup.
