The Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe expressed confidence that the country’s economy will grow by about 4-5 percent this year (2026), maintaining the growth rate recorded in the last two years.
The Governor made this remarks while announcing the Central Bank’s Policy Outlook for 2026 and Beyond held at the Central Bank Headquarters in Colombo Fort yesterday (08) morning.
The Governor also said that since the Sri Lankan economy has been able to stabilize in the past two years amidst numerous domestic and foreign challenges, there is strong confidence that even the sectors that were devastated by the recent Cyclone Ditwah will be able to recover quickly. Sri Lanka has been able to achieve significant progress across the key sectors of the economy, namely financial stability, external and monetary.
Accordingly, he stated that the country has been able to recover with great confidence and at a significant pace in rebuilding. The Governor pointed out that everyone should work together to stand strong economically, utilizing the stability that Sri Lanka has built due to the commendable reforms it has carried out in the economic and monetary policy sectors in the past.
The Governor also said that he believes that the economy has a greater capacity to recover from the devastation of this cyclone much faster than in the past because the reforms have progressed.
He also said that Sri Lanka has been able to make significant progress in strengthening macroeconomic stability in 2025, while continuing to pursue policy reforms.
Secretary to the Ministry of Finance and Planning Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Deputy Secretaries to the Treasury, members of the Monetary Board of the CBSL, senior officials of the CBSL, representatives of various foreign institutions, heads of local and foreign banks and others were present at the event.
