Carrom World Cup

Sri Lankan players had a successful outing at the 6th Carrom World Cup, winning four medals at the tournament held in the United States.

In San Francisco, with 20 countries participating, Sri Lanka’s men’s team, the defending champions, had to settle for the silver medal after losing to India. The Sri Lankan women’s team also finished second, putting up a strong fight but lost to the Indian women’s team, as they have won five times in a row.  Overall, Sri Lanka secured two silver medals and two bronze medals. The silver medals came in the team events, while the bronze medals were earned in the men’s and women’s doubles events.  In the semi-finals, Sri Lanka’s teams defeated their Maldivian counterparts to reach the finals.

This year’s men’s team featured Saheed Hilmi, Nishan Fernando, Anas Ahmed, and Kaween Nimneth, while the women’s team included Joseph Rositha, Tharushi Himahansika, Tashmila Kavindi, and Hirushi Malshani. In the doubles matches for third place, both the Sri Lankan men’s and women’s teams defeated their American opponents. The men’s doubles event featured Saheed Hilmi and Anas Ahmed, while Tharushi Himahansika and Hirushi Malshani competed in the women’s doubles.  The closing ceremony of the tournament was held yesterday, and the Sri Lankan team is scheduled to return home on November 23.
