BYD has retained its position as the world’s largest seller of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), recording total global sales of 4,602,436 units in 2025. The achievement marks another major milestone for the company and reinforces its leadership in the global transition towards sustainable mobility.\
In 2025, BYD also became the world’s largest seller of battery electric vehicles, reflecting sustained growth across its fully electric portfolio. The company’s performance was driven by strong demand across both domestic and international markets, supported by continued investment in technology, manufacturing scale, and vertically integrated clean energy solutions.
A key driver of this growth was BYD’s accelerated international expansion. For the first time, annual overseas sales surpassed one million units, reaching over 1.04 million vehicles across more than 110 countries. This represents a 145 percent year on year increase, with Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia emerging as key growth regions. China remains BYD’s largest market, accounting for the majority of total NEV sales.
This global momentum is reflected in Sri Lanka, where BYD has been leading sales in the brand new segment in EVs and PHEVs, following the lifting of vehicle import restrictions in February 2025. Through its authorised distributor, John Keells CG Auto, BYD has introduced nine models to the local market, including DOLPHIN, ATTO 3, SEAL, M6, ATTO 1, ATTO 2, SEALION 5, SEALION 6, and SHARK 6. They have established a growing NEV ecosystem, supported by seven showrooms across Colombo, Moratuwa, Kandy, Galle, Ampara, Kurunegala, and Ratnapura, along with over 21 charging points nationwide.
Commenting on the milestone, John Keells CG Auto, CEO, Charith Panditharatne said, “JKCG Auto is proud to be the authorised distributor of BYD in Sri Lanka. As the world’s leading new energy vehicle brand, BYD’s rapid rise in the global automotive industry reflects its strength in cutting-edge technology and engineering. We are proud to be part of BYD’s journey in Sri Lanka and believe the brand will play a critical role in accelerating the country’s transition to new energy mobility in the years ahead.”
Further strengthening its presence, BYD has also introduced its premium global sub brand, DENZA, to Sri Lanka, making the country the first market in South Asia to launch the DENZA B5 and DENZA B8 models.
Founded in Shenzhen, China, in 1995 as a rechargeable battery manufacturer, BYD has evolved into a global technology company, leveraging its expertise in batteries, power electronics, and vehicle manufacturing to lead the new energy vehicle sector.
BYD’s continued growth reflects its long term commitment to innovation and its mission to advance sustainable mobility solutions globally.
