Angelo steers defending champions St. Sylvester’s

Defending champions St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy, led by standout boxer SPP Angelo excelled at the 105th Stubbs Shield Boxing Championship at the Royal MAS Arena.

Angelo, competing in the Senior Boys’ 52kg division, delivered a powerful performance, forcing DSS Mendaka of Pilimathalawa Central College to concede defeat in the second round.

Angelo’s forced his opponent’s corner to throw in the towel in the second round, while Murajudeen and Ahmed dominated their Youth Boys bouts, securing quick victories with powerful combinations. Murajudeen overwhelmed MUM Madhushanka of Udagama MV, Balangoda, while Ahmed triumphed over MY Thahir of Wesley College with a barrage of effective punches.

Sri Lanka junior international Aazil Murajudeen (60kg) from Zahira College, Colombo, and NA Ahmed (52kg) of Royal College, Colombo, were among other top performers, both winning by technical knockouts within the first round, thrilling the crowd with their swift and decisive victories.

Mahanama College, Colombo, and S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, also emerged as strong contenders. Both schools produced several impressive wins, although each faced some setbacks. In the Youth Girls division, TGMSP Thiththagalla (54kg) of Hemamali Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy, captivated the audience with a hard-fought victory over SHHE Fernando of Vihara Mahadevi   Balika Vidyalaya, Kiribathgoda.

WAJ Dhananjaya of Vidyarathana University College, Horana, kept his team’s hopes alive, winning a unanimous decision over M Zaid of Zahira College, Colombo, in the Junior Boys’ 48kg class. Meanwhile, Mahanama College enjoyed a productive day, securing three wins out of four bouts, with WTLM Abeysekera (Junior Boys 46kg), RIR Perera (Junior Boys 50kg), KAVS Karavita (Junior Boys 54kg), and HS Nambuwasam (Youth Boys 49kg) all achieving  victories.

S.Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, also launched a strong performance, winning three of five contests. However, they suffered a surprise loss when WTR Dias of Sri Sumana Saman MV, Rathnapura, earned a unanimous decision against Sri Lanka junior international RAAM Ranasinghe (Youth Boys 60kg).

The Youth Girls division saw TGMSP Thiththagalla of Hemamali Balika Vidyalaya pull off a thrilling win in the 54kg category. The tournament, part of the All Island National School Games organized by the Education Ministry in association with the Schools Boxing Association,

features nearly 500 boxers from 132 schools competing in 36 weight classes across three age divisions.
