45–60 Children born annually with Thalassemia

Sri Lanka has around 2,500 thalassemia patients, with 45 to 60 children born each year with major thalassemia, the Ministry of Health said.

Health officials said screening and awareness programmes are being carried out in high-risk districts including Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Ragama and Batticaloa.

Authorities state that pre-marital screening is being promoted to reduce the risk of hereditary disease.

Screening is available at government hospitals using standard blood tests, officials added.
