“Sri Lanka has potential to emerge as high-performing nation”

Sri Lanka, with its strategic location in the Indian Ocean, its rich cultural heritage, and dynamic entrepreneurial spirit,  is well-placed to chart its own path of punching above its weight, Ambassador of the Republic of Turkiye to Sri Lanka Dr. Semih Lütfü Turgut told the 67th Annual General Meeting of the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka held in Colombo.

Citing an example of the mongoose and cobra, he said cobras are among the most dangerous snakes. Yet, when threatened, the mongoose does not flee.  It darts in and out, avoiding strides with lightning reflexes, using its sharp teeth and relentless attacks. The mongoose’s speed and partial resistance to venom give it niche strength against a larger foe. This is a comparative advantage in nature, and it applies equally in life and in business.  Small animals can thrive by leveraging unique adaptations, just as small nations can excel in specialised centres.

“History teaches us that some of the most inspiring stories come from countries that punch above their weight by focusing on sectors where they hold a comparative advantage. Singapore is a city-state with fewer people than Istanbul’s suburbs. Yet, by leveraging its strategic location and investing in efficiency, it transformed itself into one of the busiest ports and financial hubs in the world.”
