Defending champions Kandy Sports Club will be eager to return to winning ways when they host Havelock Sports Club in a crucial Inter-club A Division League match at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium in Kandy today. The match kicks off at 3.30 pm and is an important contest for both teams as the league begins to take shape.
This is a recovery match for Kandy SC, who suffered a rare home defeat last week when they went down 20–25 to CR and FC. That loss ended their strong run at Nittawela and forced the champions to reflect on areas that need quick correction, especially in game control and discipline.
Kandy SC coach Fazil Marija said the team has responded positively after the setback.
“We were disappointed with the result last week, but the response from the players has been very good. This is a chance to correct our mistakes and show our character at home,” Marija said.
Havelock SC, meanwhile, arrive in Kandy full of confidence after their win over CH and FC at Havelock Park. The Park Club side know the challenge will be tough, but they see this match as an opportunity to test themselves against the champions on their own ground.
Havelock SC skipper Sri Lanka forward Janidu Fernando said his team is ready for the challenge.
“We respect Kandy as champions, but we are coming here with belief. If we stick to our plans and stay disciplined, we know we can compete strongly,” Fernando said.
Kandy SC will miss regular fly-half Asiri Seneviratne, but Hirusha Nethmina has stepped in to guide the back division. Skipper Tharindu Chathuranga will once again lead the forwards, with Kandy expected to rely on physical dominance, structured play, and territory control to regain momentum.
Havelock SC will also be without influential winger Janith Wijeratne, who is replaced by Kodagoda. Mushin Faleel has been named on the bench and could be used as an impact player if needed. The visitors will depend on speed, quick ball movement, and breakdown efficiency to challenge Kandy at Nittawela.
In the other league match today, CH and FC will take on Siri Lions Sports Club at Longden Place under floodlights, with kick-off scheduled for 6.00 pm.
Siri Lions face a tough task but will aim to produce a disciplined and energetic performance. CH and FC, on the other hand, will look to control the game through their forwards and apply sustained pressure as they chase another important league victory.
