CSSL President Calls for Collaboration and Innovation to Realize Sri Lanka’s Digital Economy Aspirations
The Computer Society of Sri Lanka (CSSL) 36th Annual General Meeting called with a resounding call to action from its President Dr. Ajantha Atukorale, who highlighted the critical role of technology and innovation in driving the nation’s digital transformation. AGM will be held at Shangri-La Colombo on 9th January 2025, will bring together Policy Makers, Government Officials, Academia, Industry Leaders, Professionals, and other related Stakeholders to reflect on CSSL’s achievements and chart a vision for the future.
Dr. Ajantha Atukorale with passion and a sense of purpose, acknowledged the remarkable strides made by the CSSL and its members over the past two years. "Our society thrives on the dedication of its members," he said. "Together, we have fostered a vibrant community of professionals, enthusiasts, and innovators committed to advancing Sri Lanka's technological landscape."
Dr. Atukorale emphasized the pivotal role of CSSL in steering Sri Lanka toward a sustainable and inclusive digital economy. He underscored the organization’s responsibility not only to adapt to technological changes but to lead the way in empowering communities, small businesses, and industries to harness the transformative power of digital tools.
Achievements and Milestones
Reflecting on the society’s recent accomplishments, the Dr. Ajantha Atukorale detailed several key milestones that demonstrate CSSL’s leadership in the technology sector. These include successful initiatives to build capacity among IT professionals, promote ethical practices in Computing, and enhance digital literacy across the nation. The society has also played a vital role in fostering dialogue between the public and private sectors to drive policy reforms that support innovation and also in policy advocacy to the government related to the field of Computing.
"Our initiatives have helped lay the foundation for a future-ready workforce, one that is equipped to navigate the challenges of a rapidly evolving digital landscape," the President noted.
Society 5.0: A Human-Centric Approach
A significant highlight was the introduction of the concept of Society 5.0 as a guiding framework for Sri Lanka’s digital transformation. Society 5.0, a concept originating in Japan, envisions a human-centered society that balances economic advancement with the resolution of social challenges through the integration of cyberspace and physical space.
“Society 5.0 represents a paradigm shift,". It’s about using technology not just to drive economic growth but to create a society where everyone can thrive—one that is inclusive, sustainable, and resilient.
He emphasized that adopting the principles of Society 5.0 would help Sri Lanka tackle challenges such as aging populations, resource scarcity, and inequality while simultaneously unlocking new opportunities in areas like smart agriculture, e-health, and education.
Dr. Ajantha Atukorale urged CSSL members and stakeholders to think beyond traditional digital economy models and embrace this transformative vision. "*At a juncture which the government has focused on elevating the society via poverty alleviation, digital transformation and projects like Clean Sri Lanka*, we must aim for a future where technology serves humanity, enhances quality of life, and addresses societal challenges in innovative ways," he said.
The Vision for a Digital Sri Lanka
A key focus of the President’s message was Sri Lanka’s journey toward becoming a digital economy. This vision, he explained, aligns with global trends where digitalization is seen as a driver of economic growth, job creation, and social equity. However, achieving this goal requires coordinated efforts across multiple sectors.
"In today’s ever-evolving technological landscape, CSSL stands as a cornerstone for progress," the President remarked. "It is not just about technology adoption but also about creating an ecosystem where innovation thrives, where businesses—both large and small—can compete globally, and where every citizen has access to the benefits of digital inclusion."
The Dr. Ajantha Atukorale highlighted the importance of supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in this transformation. MSMEs, which form the backbone of Sri Lanka’s economy, often face barriers to adopting digital tools. Addressing these challenges through targeted interventions, including training programs and financial incentives, will be critical to ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital revolution.
A Call for Collaboration
The President’s message extended beyond CSSL’s members, emphasizing the need for partnerships between government, academia, and the private sector. "Achieving our digital economy aspirations is not something CSSL or any single entity can accomplish alone," he said. "It requires a collective effort—one where all stakeholders work in unison toward a shared vision."
He pointed to recent collaborations as examples of what can be achieved when diverse stakeholders come together. These include joint initiatives to advance cybersecurity, develop smart city solutions, and create policies that support technological innovation while protecting user privacy and security.
Addressing Challenges
While highlighting the opportunities presented by digital transformation, the President also acknowledged the challenges Sri Lanka faces. These include a lack of infrastructure in rural areas, a digital skills gap, and the need to create policies that balance innovation with regulation.
Dr. Ajantha Atukorale stressed the importance of investing in education and training to build a digitally literate population. "Our schools, universities, and training institutions must prioritize digital skills," he said. "This is not just about preparing the next generation for jobs of the future but about empowering them to become creators and innovators in their own right."
Inspiring the Next Generation
The address concluded with an inspiring message for young people, urging them to embrace technology not just as a career path but as a tool for solving some of society’s most pressing challenges. "You are the architects of the future," the President said. "Your creativity, passion, and determination will shape the Sri Lanka we envision—a country where technology empowers all citizens, enhances quality of life, and drives sustainable growth."
Looking Ahead
As CSSL enters another year of leadership in the tech sector, its President reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity. The society plans to launch new initiatives aimed at expanding digital access, supporting entrepreneurs, and creating platforms for knowledge sharing.
The President’s message serves as a powerful reminder of the potential of technology to transform Sri Lanka’s economy and society. It also highlights the need for collective action to ensure that this transformation benefits all citizens.
