Barista Sri Lanka Strengthens Commitment to Sustainability on World Environment Day

In celebration of World Environment Day, Barista Sri Lanka proudly reaffirms its dedication to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. As the nation’s leading café brand, Barista continues to embed eco-conscious values across every aspect of its operations, from product design and packaging to supply chain management, energy use, and waste reduction.

Dilupa Pathirana, CEO/Director of Barista Sri Lanka, stated,
“As we grow as a national brand, our responsibility to lead with purpose becomes increasingly important. Sustainability is not just an operational goal; it is a long-term strategic commitment. We are moving towards a regenerative business model by reimagining how our entire value chain can create a positive environmental and social impact. From sustainable sourcing and biodegradable packaging to exploring renewable energy adoption and community engagement, every initiative is designed to contribute to a healthier, more resilient ecosystem. Ultimately, we believe that true business growth must go hand in hand with environmental restoration and meaningful social progress.”

Throughout the 2024/2025 financial year, Barista achieved significant environmental milestones, most notably in sustainable packaging. In 2023, the company replaced plastic lids on its paper takeaway cups with biodegradable sugarcane-based alternatives, making the entire cup fully biodegradable. This transition helped prevent approximately 28 tons of plastic waste from entering oceans and landfills in 2024. Additionally, Barista’s shift to glass bottles for takeaway water, initiated in 2021, saved an estimated 2 tons of plastic in 2024 alone, further underscoring the brand’s commitment to reducing plastic pollution in the café industry.

Aligned with this vision, Barista planted 1,200 trees in the Knuckles Mountain Range in 2022 as part of its reforestation efforts, reinforcing the brand’s focus on climate resilience and ecosystem restoration. These trees are expected to produce approximately 17.2 million pounds of oxygen as they mature. The company has also expanded its sustainable merchandise range to include reusable tumblers, mugs, tote bags, and notebooks made from upcycled waste materials such as cookie wrappers, cups, and straws, further promoting a circular economy. Moreover, Barista is actively exploring the integration of solar energy into its operations to reduce carbon emissions and energy dependency.

This World Environment Day, Barista Sri Lanka emphasizes that sustainability is not just a responsibility, but a core element of its business strategy and brand purpose, integrated into every aspect of how the brand operates and grows.
