83% of deaths linked to Non-Communicable diseases

The Ministry of Health has revealed that 83 percent of deaths in Sri Lanka are caused by non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Dr. Shreeni Alahapperuma, Director of the Non-Communicable Diseases Unit, stated that one in three individuals suffers from heart-related conditions, with 63.9 percent not seeking medical treatment.

She further noted that 15 percent of the population is affected by Diabetes, of whom nearly 49 percent do not receive treatment.

Health authorities stressed the need for increased awareness, early detection, and proper medical care to address the growing burden of NCDs.
